Description

In the excellent AVATAR fanfiction _Death of a thousand cuts_ by Loopy777, there is made mention of something called an axefish...
_It's a shame Suki and I didn't work out, but we were, like, axe-fish from different currents. Being together was nice, but trying to keep that going would have made us unhappy, so we ended things before there was a real problem. People do that all the time. The axe-fish should try it.loopy777.deviantart.com/art/Tr… - Chapter 5.
(yes, it occurs to me that I was literal about their name, focusing on that & not any behavioral patterns which also could've been the source of the name)

The trick for me, as you'll see in the other two pages, is to find a way to utilize the downward cutting motion used by axes...(the axe-based creatures in the other two pages, nonetheless likely tend to move forwards like a sword or dagger)
...and then I saw a drawing of an anglerfish, and I remembered how they waggle their lures to-and-fro...in other words, the forwards-and-backwards motion needed for an axe.
(the Reef Axefish was because, before I saw the anglerfish or the grenadier, the war club looked more like something you'd see swimming - brightly-colored - in a reef)

The Hawaiian club, flat as it is on the sides, might be something to try on a creature like a Prickle Shark  (looks kinda like a deflated pufferfish)

The one based on the Hawaiian tooth club is very interesting. I can imagine that one being fairly maneuverable and graceful, dancing around its prey as it slices with side-swiping attacks. The reef fish being brightly colored sounds fun, and it taught me something today; I had never thought much about reef-hugging fish before, but yes, they would probably be very colorful, wouldn't they? And, of course, anglerfish are always scary looking, so the idea of one rushing over to start hacking away at you is terrifying. :D
